Montenegro, the Bay of Kotor the most beautiful fjord in the Mediterranean

Montenegro or Crna Gora, which literally means “Black Mountain,” is one of the hidden gems that features a unique geographical characteristic, imposing mountains that plunge into an inland sea and a mild climate thanks to the terrain’s configuration. Nicknamed in some cases “the new Monaco,” it has undergone a true transformation in the last fifteen years, becoming a very interesting destination. Here, the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), or simply Bocche di Cattaro, is one of the most extraordinary landscape and historical jewels of Europe. Defined as the “southernmost fjord in Europe,” it is actually an ancient river canyon flooded by the sea. The architecture of the houses is inextricably linked to the Republic of Venice, which ruled the region from 1420 to 1797; the lions of St. Mark are carved on many of the city gates, and the local cuisine still has Venetian origins, not to mention the local dialect that sometimes takes on familiar tones of the “Serenissima.”

Montenegro port and Marina of Kalimanj
Not far from Kotor is Tivat, which hosts Porto Montenegro. It is one of the most luxurious and cutting-edge marinas for superyachts in the world. Born from an old Yugoslav naval arsenal, it is now an award-winning marina that can accommodate yachts up to 250 meters (practically any existing mega-yacht). Around the marina, an ultra-luxury village has emerged with 5-star hotels, high-fashion boutiques, exclusive restaurants, and a helipad.

Just a short distance from the city center, the Gradska Marina Kalimanj is the traditional municipal port of Tivat. It is mainly used by locals for mooring small fishing boats, motorboats, and small sailing boats. It offers a glimpse into the authentic coastal life of the city.
Portonovi Marina
On the opposite shore of the bay from Tivat, Portonovi is another very recent cutting-edge luxury marina. It can accommodate up to 238 vessels and yachts (up to 120 meters) and is the centerpiece of a luxury resort that also hosts the famous One&Only hotel.
